Bytesweep

Bytesweep is a graphical disk usage analyzer for macOS and Linux that shows you exactly where your storage went and helps you reclaim it safely. Instead of leaving you with a vague number, it scans your drives in seconds and breaks everything down into folders, files, and file types you can actually act on.

What Bytesweep Does

Bytesweep scans any volume or folder, including internal disks, external drives, and network shares, processing millions of files in seconds entirely on your machine. It then presents the results through eight distinct visualizations so you can look at the same data from whatever angle answers your question.

Safety Comes First

Bytesweep is built around the idea that a tool with permission to read your whole disk should not decide on its own what to throw away. It sorts everything it finds into three plain answers.

• Safe to clear, caches, build output, dependency folders, and AI tool caches that rebuild automatically.

• Worth a look, downloads, installers, simulator images, and local model weights that are re-obtainable but slow to replace.

• Do not delete, SSH keys, unpushed git history, virtual machines, photo libraries, and open databases, named individually and never removed without your say so.

The operating system, your home folder, and Bytesweep's own restore points are refused outright. There is no button for them.

Sweep and Undo

Safe Sweep collects only provably safe items such as caches, logs, build outputs, and old installers. Everything moves to a restore point on the same disk first, so Undo puts it back in one click. Every removal is one you ticked and confirmed. There is no automatic mode and no scheduled deletion.

Built for Mac and Linux

On macOS, Bytesweep solves the mystery of System Data by naming the real folders behind it. Time Machine local snapshots, Xcode DerivedData, iOS simulators, iPhone backups, Docker.raw, Homebrew and pip caches, and mail attachments are all found, measured, and explained. It runs on Apple silicon and Intel, on macOS 11 Big Sur and later, and it works on Linux too, using the right package manager command for your distribution.

Private by Design

Bytesweep requires no account, sends no telemetry, and collects no analytics. Zero bytes of your file names ever leave your device. The app works fully offline, so pulling the network cable changes nothing about how it scans or cleans.
