About LeftLane
A free browser driving simulator for driving on the left. Rehearse roundabouts, right turns and staying left before you pick up a rental car abroad.
The first time I drove on the left, I had an accident. I was making a right turn and looked the wrong way for oncoming traffic. I knew the rule perfectly well. Habit won anyway.
That is the problem LeftLane exists for. If you have driven on the right your whole life, you already understand "keep left". Understanding it is not the issue. The issue is that thirty years of muscle memory answers first, and it answers in exactly the moments you cannot think your way through: a clockwise roundabout, a right turn across traffic, pulling out of a rental lot or a gas station, and the quiet drift back to the right after a turn is finished.
LeftLane is a browser-based rehearsal tool for that specific failure. You drive short scenarios built around the moments where the old habit returns. Each one takes a couple of minutes, ends by naming which habit slipped rather than scoring you, and tells you one concrete thing to watch on the next attempt. Then you run it again. Repetition is the whole mechanism, because the thing being changed is a reflex and reflexes do not respond to explanations.
Ten scenarios are free forever, with no account, no download and no card. Twenty more sit behind a one-time pass with no subscription. There is also a scenario called The Empty Car Park, which is exactly that, with nothing to finish and nothing being judged.
It runs in your browser on a computer, tablet, or a phone held sideways. Keyboard, game controller, or a steering wheel and pedals all work.
What it is not: it is not a driving course, not a substitute for professional instruction, and not a full driving simulator. It teaches no local road rules and it will not tell you the speed limit in the country you are visiting. It rehearses one narrow thing, which is the habit change, so that the first time you meet a clockwise roundabout is not also the first time you have thought about one.
Made by one person, after the accident described above.

Hi, I built this after my own first drive on the left went badly. I was making a right turn and looked the wrong way for oncoming traffic. I knew the rule perfectly well. Habit won anyway. That is the whole thesis. The problem is not knowledge, it is a reflex, and reflexes do not respond to explanations. So LeftLane is short scenarios you repeat rather than a course you read, and it runs in the browser with no install. Happy to answer anything about how it is built.
